Young Ambassadors step up to tackle youth unemployment

Updated: 7 October 2022 at 15:28pm

We've recruited more than 20 paid Young Ambassadors to help break down the barriers to employment faced by young people in Downham.

The Downham Futures Project, which was officially launched last night, will be spear headed by over 20 passionate young people aged 18-30. Over the next 18 months, they’ll be speaking directly to young people in Downham to find out the barriers preventing them from getting employment and what support they feel would benefit. By the end of the project, they’ll use their research to make recommendations on how local services can better support young people in Downham looking for work.

Phoenix Chief Executive, Denise Fowler, said: “I’m really pleased to be partnering with Lewisham Council and Circle Collective. As a resident-led landlord, with many homes in Downham, Phoenix is passionate about driving change in the area and improving opportunities for our residents and young people. I’m proud to support these passionate young ambassadors – who better to drive the change than young people themselves?”

We caught up with a few of the newly appointed Young Ambassadors to find out why they’ve decided to get involved:

The Downham Futures project is delivered in partnership with Lewisham Council and Circle Collective with funding from the Youth Futures Foundation. If the project is a success, there could be another £1.5million up for grabs from the Youth Futures Foundation to deliver on the recommendations made by the Young Ambassadors.
