Residents at home in new extra care scheme

The first residents are settling in to Hazelhurst Court, Phoenix's new extra care scheme for older people close to Beckenham Hill train station.

Our first residential development and the only purpose built extra care facility in Lewisham, the new scheme offers a range of one and two bedroom apartments, designed with older people in mind.

Thanks to funding from the Mayor of London and Lewisham Council, these new homes will allow older people to live independently in secure and comfortable accommodation, within their communities and established networks of friends, family and neighbours.

Beryl Goodhew, who was one of the first residents to move into the new scheme, said: “I knew it was time for me to move from my old home, I'd been unwell and I needed a smaller place that was adapted. But I never expected my new flat to be as lovely as it is. My friends have all told me how lucky I am, and how they wish they were moving in too!”

Designed by Levitt Bernstein, the development includes a range of communal spaces including a café, courtyard, lounge and gardens. Residents will also benefit from 24 hour care and support from our care partner, Notting Hill Pathways, who will deliver tailored care packages to those residents with an identified care need.

Many of the first residents to move into the scheme were previously under-occupying large family homes in the Phoenix area. Their move to new, more appropriate accommodation has already enabled a series of chain lettings, freeing up homes for dozens of Lewisham families.

Phoenix Chief Executive, Jim Ripley said: “Hazelhurst Court is our first residential development and I couldn’t be prouder of these amazing new homes, designed especially for older people.

Residents will benefit not only from high quality and contemporary apartments, a beautiful café and communal spaces, but also from the peace of mind that 24hour care and support will bring.

It’s been fantastic to meet our new residents and to hear first hand the difference that their new home will bring. As a resident-led housing association we want to do all that we can to deliver more quality homes for individuals and families in need.”

Planning permission has been awarded for three other developments in Lewisham and Bromley and construction works will begin shortly.
