Our first residential development of sixty homes for older people has won a top national award.
Hazelhurst Court, an extra-care development located close to Beckenham Hill train station and adjacent to our existing homes, was announced as the 'Best Older People's Housing Development' for a scheme of under 70 homes at the Inside Housing Development Awards.
Judges commended Hazelhurst Court for its striking, attractive design and the integration of communal facilities for the benefit of existing and neighbouring residents. The new homes, designed by Levitt Bernstein and built with funding contributions from the Mayor of Lewisham and Lewisham Council were designed with the needs of older people in mind.
The extra care development is comprised of two new buildings with generous communal spaces including an internal courtyard and fishpond, garden room, café (with commercial kitchen) and TV suite. Each home is dual aspect with balconies and outside spaces that overlook the neighbouring streets and internal courtyards.
Phoenix residents were engaged in the design and development of the new homes from the project’s inception and the high quality of the new homes has also been recognised with wins for Hazelhurst Court at the RIBA London Awards 2018 and in the HAPPI category of the Housing Design Awards 2018.
Jim Ripley, Phoenix Chief Executive said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to win this award, the third that Hazelhurst Court - our first residential development - has won. We’re incredibly proud of the quality of these new homes and the impact they’ve had for Phoenix residents and the wider community and delighted that this has been recognised by Inside Housing.
“Most of all I’m incredibly proud of the feedback that we’ve received from residents, and the high standard Hazelhurst Court has set for Phoenix as we build more new homes in our community.”
Phebe Deeble, a resident of Hazelhurst Court said: “I had a fabulous evening at the awards and was so pleased to be there representing the tenants of Hazelhurst Court. I’m absolutely elated that Hazelhurst won the prize, it’s an incredible achievement and I had a thoroughly wonderful time.
“There is nothing that I don’t like about my home – from the moment I walked in I was amazed by how beautiful and quiet it was. I describe Hazelhurst as my utopia, I couldn’t wish for any better and I’m so pleased that other people agree!”
Building works are underway at three other sites in Lewisham and Bromley, and Phoenix is due to complete 34 new homes in 2019. Earlier this year we secured £60million investment from Pension Insurance Corporation (PIC) plc to fund development of a further 200 new homes in the area and to unlock the potential for further developments in the area.
