Chinese New Year was celebrated with dancing, stilt walking and magic shows at our February Community Links event.
The event celebrated the Year of the Monkey, with activities ranging from fortune cookie racing to dragon mask making. There were performances of traditional fan and ribbon dancing while residents enjoyed Chinese refreshments.
As well as lots of activities, residents had the opportunity to ‘catch up’ with us and speak directly with staff and teams about upcoming plans and projects. We are London’s first Community Gateway housing association, which means residents can become shareholding members and play a key role in decision making.
Residents were also able to outline the priorities they would like us to focus on in the upcoming year. The outcomes of this consultation influence how we will take action to continue improving the local area, for example by involving young people in decision making, providing training opportunities or reducing fly-tipping.
Chief Executive Jim Ripley said: “As a resident led housing association, this is a fantastic opportunity for our residents to have their say about what they feel is important in the community. Our Community Links events are always popular and great fun for everyone.”
There were lots of information stalls at Community Links from Phoenix teams, as well as representatives from community organisations such as the Citizens Advice Bureau, Mindcare and the Prince’s Trust.
Lisa, a guest at the event said, “My children love the smoothie bike and the face painting. It’s great because my Mum is a resident and she’s brought us along for the children, but it also means that I can ask questions about things she needs but wouldn’t ask herself.”
