All of the entrants to our annual gardening competition were invited to a special celebratory event to acknowledge their achievements and meet their fellow green-fingered residents.

Phoenix in Bloom celebrates the hard work and the talents of the gardeners in our community. The awards recognise the contributions our residents make to keeping our community beautiful, whether they have an expansive garden to care for or just a balcony.

The winners and those highly commended were announced by Phoenix tenant and Board Chair, Anne McGurk, at the ceremony at the Farmstead Road Community Garden on Tuesday 28 August.

Prizes range from Best Residential Communal Garden to Best Balcony Display and Young Gardener of the Year.

Mrs Maria Ali, who leads the group that won Best Residential Community Garden, said: “Gardening is open to everyone, no matter who you are. Schools bring their pupils here, people who are unwell can get away from things here. Everyone can come to the allotment, be safe, have a cup of tea and a chat, and have a go. We’re thrilled we won this award.”

Patrice Newman-Sheaf, tenant and Phoenix in Bloom judge, said: “This year of Phoenix in Bloom has been marvellous. Gardening gets people moving, and this competition gives people who don’t know how to garden the motivation to give it a go.”

Anne McGurk, tenant and Board Chair, said: “How wonderful it is to be right in the middle of things growing. Gardening binds communities together and gives people a common purpose. Well done to all of this year’s contestants.”

Jim Ripley, Phoenix Chief Executive, said: “South Lewisham is one of London’s best kept secrets, with plenty of public parks and private green spaces. Phoenix in Bloom is a great community project, encouraging all our residents – whether they’re blessed with a large garden or just have a balcony to decorate – to give gardening a go.”

“Congratulations to all of our winners and everyone who entered for making Phoenix a more beautiful place to live.”

Phoenix in Bloom is an annual competition. This year’s judging panel was made up of two tenants and two employees of Phoenix Community Housing, and the judging was completed over two days in July and August.
