Thank you to everyone who took part in Phoenix Community Housing’s Diversity Day 2020!
Residents came together to celebrate the diversity of our community through online workshops and a live discussion panel.
Residents took part in our ‘Become an inventor’ workshop with coach and inventor Denise Farquason, to learn about African and Caribbean inventors throughout history whose inventions have changed the world. Residents then brainstormed ideas and came up with a plan for their own invention, which they made out of recycled materials from around the house.
“I most enjoyed learning a new skill, and spending quality time with my daughter doing something constructive.”
African fabrics and prints were on the agenda in our ‘Make a printed facemask’ workshop run by local resident and designer, Sandra Stephenson. Residents learned about the rich history of African prints, and then step-by-step made their own African print face mask which they can accessorize.
“I enjoyed learning to make a mask, an essential for these days. It was great seeing the kids taking part. The instructions were very good and answered all the questions and issues raised, and also talked about the benefits of sewing.”
We also gave away 94 goody bags, packed with children's books on diversity and inclusion, tie dye kits and more!
To top it all off, we held a live discussion panel on the topic of ‘What is community’, with residents, staff and special guest speakers.
“I liked seeing how everyone was engaged, kind and helpful. Overall the session was amazing!”
Thank you to everyone who took part, and to our special guest panel:
