My time at Phoenix

Runnel has recently started our supported internship program that supports young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to experience the world of work and find out what their career dreams are. Runnel has written the following article about his experience and why he would recommend other young people with SEND to enrol.

My name is Runnel Hilarion, I am 19 years old and was born and live in London. I am currently doing a supported internship program at Phoenix Community Housing that was organised by my college to witness what it feels like to work at a certain company and gain experience from there. For my hobbies, I enjoy going out to find activities to explore like exercising and entertainment. I am interested in finding new things around the world to discover and learn about and I like to travel around different countries. For personal entertainment I enjoy televisions, movies and games and finally, my passion for reading.

How did you hear about the program?

I was recommended to take part in it by my career advisor to gain some experience and knowledge to prepare myself for a future career in IT.

Why did you decide to do it?

I decided because it would be the best for me to require experience and gain a lot of knowledge about the world or work and IT so I can be able to learn from them and showcase the lessons, experience and hardwork when I decide to work at a specific IT company.

What have you done so far?

What I have done so far in the program is designing and creating posters for Black History Month and create highlights and showcase the people we are celebrating, which you can see on Phoenix’s social media accounts. I partook in also designing and creating posts for the disability awareness event and the company's upcoming corporate video launch.

What is the most valuable thing you have learnt?

I have learned about my skills in designing and saw my potential while I was doing them. It made realise that if I wanted to pursue focusing on that I could be doing wonders.

What's your favourite thing you have done so far?

So far, I do not have a favourite since I still have a lot of activities to do on the program.

What do you want to do after the program?

For my plans after the program is to be able to get into apprenticeships thanks to the experience that will be given to me to prepare. Then after my years as an apprentice I would be able to work in a high paying job at an IT company.

Why do you think other people should do the program?

Why I recommend people to take part in this program is not only you gain experience from the work you have done, it is also a great way to get a glimpse of the working environment giving you a great boost to your path of the career goal you choose and will be a great help for you when you start your future jobs or apprenticeships.
